Statement
My artwork includes home textile products, clothing, yardage, and tapestry. I like to create textile artworks in a national style with a clean, tidy feeling and a light artistic conception. My artwork evokes an emotional feeling and it always calms me down, just like blue and white porcelain from the Song dynasty in China. I tend to use solid colors when I design a home textile product. Some of the edges and corners display a complicated design and decorative pattern created by using different techniques, such as dyeing and stitching, and gives an overall feeling of the ancient and classic.
My process is as follows: once I have an idea in my mind, then I think it through first. I ask myself: Is this idea feasible? What methods can be used to achieve this? Are there any other ideas that can be related to this idea? To solve those questions, I will mind map-brainstorm an idea that expands on the theme, material, and techniques to be using. I would think about how I can explore on this idea. I may go back to look at past samples or projects and what kind of things I can push forward and take it in a different direction.
My artwork represents a kind of “Oriental elegance”. I personally have a lot of respect for the historical craftsmen, as they give me lots of inspiration in their classic designs. I read history books about Song Dynasty porcelain, the book which including the inspiration of the craftsmen came from. That book describes the porcelain that came from everyday life events, and some special plants that have a special commemorative significance. To fit in with contemporary work in the future, I wish my artwork to have the visual effect of the mysterious, gentle, euphemistic, expression of oriental elegance.
